German scientists create record-breaking speed chip

Researchers at Paderborn University have announced the development of a new chip based on silicon-germanium (SiGe) technology. This device sets a new record for speed and bandwidth in track-and-hold circuits, which are a critical component of modern electronics. The chip performs the process of converting analog signals to digital at an extremely high speed. This is reported by Ixbt.com reports .

The new development is capable of processing over 500 Gbit/s of data in a single channel using QAM modulation. In a multi-channel configuration, the total throughput can exceed 100 Tbit/s. These metrics are crucial for future 6G communication standards, large data centers, and cloud platform infrastructure.

The choice of silicon-germanium technology is no coincidence: it combines high speed with mass production capability. This approach not only increases performance but also reduces energy consumption. This is highly relevant for artificial intelligence systems and cloud services where data transfer speed is critical.

The researchers noted that the most complex part of the project was not creating the chip, but testing it. At such high frequencies, even the smallest errors can lead to noise and signal distortion. Therefore, complex models and powerful computing resources were used to verify the results.
