Google releases glittery disco-ball icons for Pixel smartphones

Google introduced a new set of disco-ball style icons for smartphone screens on Friday. This move follows the glittery icon temporarily introduced by Spotify to celebrate its 20th anniversary, which was heavily criticized (and praised by some) by users. Google decided to join the joke and announced special themed icons for Android users. This is reported by Techcrunch.com .

Sameer Samat, head of the Android ecosystem, wrote on the X social network: “Your wish is our command. Disco icons are available on Pixel devices starting today... Are you sure you really want this?”. He attached a screenshot of a Pixel phone to his post, showing all apps transformed into a glittery disco-ball look.

The new icons are available through the recently introduced custom icon customization feature on Pixel smartphones. This feature allows users to choose various styles created with the help of AI. Previously, users could only match icon colors to their wallpaper theme.

This feature was introduced with the March Pixel Drop update, which included styles like hand-drawn “Scribbles”, gold-colored “Treasure”, and colorful “Easel”. Earlier in the week, Sameer Samat jokingly shared a picture of the Chrome browser in a disco-ball look and polled about releasing such a set.

Although many called the Spotify icon “ugly”, Google brought the idea to life. Spotify, for its part, acknowledged that the glittery design is not for everyone and reminded users that the change was temporary.
