Uzbekistan will investigate information about 1,110 of its citizens allegedly fighting in Ukraine as part of the Russian military, reported Nova24.uz.
The Ukrainian government project "I Want to Live" published a list of Uzbek nationals who reportedly signed contracts with the Russian army and participated in the war. Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that it is reviewing the data.
If confirmed, these citizens will face criminal charges under Article 154 of the Criminal Code ("Mercenary Activity"), which carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
It was also noted that some individuals already possess Russian citizenship. The ministry reminded the public that dual citizenship is not allowed in Uzbekistan, and legal measures will be applied accordingly.
Officials reiterated that any participation by Uzbek citizens in foreign military conflicts is strictly prohibited.
