Uzbekistan receives $125 million to digitize water sector

The Asian Development Bank's $125 million loan will be directed toward the digitalization and modernization of Uzbekistan’s water supply sector. With this major financial support, the quality of drinking water and wastewater systems in the country will be raised to a new level.

Over the next five years, based on these funds, it is planned to install 4,800 “smart” meters and nearly 3,000 telemetry systems at the country’s key hydrotechnical facilities and main pipelines. This will enable real-time data collection, analysis, and the formation of an automated control system.

What are the plans for 2024?

This year alone, the construction of 1,619 km of drinking water networks and 521 km of sewage pipelines is planned, along with the construction and reconstruction of 162 engineering structures. This will not only improve water supply but also address existing system losses, water flow control problems, and promote efficient resource management.

Why do analysts call this a “game-changing phase”?

Currently, many water networks in Uzbekistan are outdated, have high loss rates, and lack proper source control. Millions of cubic meters of water are lost annually. Telemetry and smart meters will allow accurate recording of consumption, detection of illegal connections, and implementation of efficient water use practices.
