The Cambridge Dictionary, an important resource for English learners, has once again raised questions with an interesting update. The new edition has added nearly 6,000 new words, phrases, and slang terms. Among them are words like "skibidi", "delulu", and "broligarchy", which are becoming more popular on social media, in the media, and in everyday life.
An interesting aspect is that the word "skibidi" can have different meanings depending on the context. It can mean "cool" or "bad", and also be used for a carefree laugh without any specific meaning. The word became popular thanks to Russian animator Alexey Gerasimov, who created a YouTube animated series called "Skibidi Toilet". The series depicts "skibidi" — moving toilets with human heads, and the battle between "agents".
Additionally, "delulu" is an abbreviation and corrupted form of the word "delusional", which describes people who sometimes believe in unrealistic things. "Tradwife" is a term describing a woman who adheres to traditional gender roles in marriage.
The term "broligarchy" is a combination of the words "bro" (friend) and "oligarchy", used to describe an extremely wealthy and influential small group of people in the tech business. This term has also been used in reference to businessmen like Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Donald Trump.
One such term is "Mouse jiggler" — a computer program that automatically moves the mouse cursor, preventing the screen from locking or going into "offline" mode. This program is popular among remote workers, as it helps maintain an "online" status in messengers and other work applications.
Colin McIntosh, the head of the Cambridge Dictionary program, said: "We only add words that remain relevant. Internet culture is changing the English language, and watching this process and recording it in the dictionary is very interesting." Thus, new words not only affect the internet and slang but also serve as indicators of the evolution of the English language and its new phase.
It is worth noting that the Cambridge Dictionary added more than 3,200 new words, phrases, and expressions in 2024, and over the past year, more than 6,000 new words and slang terms have been added to the dictionary.
