The Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan has taken another step in promoting the legacy of our great scholars who made invaluable contributions to the development of world science. The new exhibition of the Center features not only religious manuscripts but also great works that laid the foundation for the development of science.
Currently, a copy of Muhammad al-Khwarizmi’s famous work – "A Brief Book on Calculations by Al-Jabr and Al-Muqabala" – which is kept in the Bodleian Library of Oxford University, will be publicly displayed for the first time in Uzbekistan. This ancient work is recognized as the main source for modern algebra.
Written in the 9th century, this book covers arithmetic and geometric calculations, the concepts of square and root, inheritance division, trade contracts, and legal matters. It is through this work that the term "algebra" entered science and continues to hold its significance to this day.
Muhammad al-Khwarizmi noted that he was greatly inspired by the attention to science and patronage of Caliph al-Ma’mun during the writing of this work. This book not only addresses complex scientific issues but also affirms its scientific value and historical importance.
The initiative of the Islamic Civilization Center is an important step not only in promoting our national heritage but also in presenting the rich cultural and scientific history of our people to the world. The exhibition will also provide information on the work’s various publications and translations into different languages.
This initiative, in turn, helps to restore and enhance the place of our ancient scientific heritage in world science.
