Mirziyoyev put forward major initiatives for the future of the SCO at the summit

On September 1, at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev delivered a speech and proposed a number of important initiatives planned to be implemented within the framework of the organization. According to the head of state, increasing the efficiency of the SCO’s activities and strengthening its global authority is of great importance today.

Among the initiatives put forward by the president:

— Enhancing the effectiveness of SCO institutions and expanding it by including countries of the Global South;
— Adopting a declaration on nuclear security issues;
— Restoring the activities of the council of interior ministers;
— Developing an anti-drug program until 2030;
— Revitalizing the «SCO–Afghanistan» dialogue group;
— Signing an agreement on trade facilitation procedures;
— Creating a regional center for strategic materials;
— Establishing an SCO Energy Consortium.

In addition, the president proposed forming a network of venture companies and funds, creating a special electronic investment portal, developing transport and transit corridors (North–South and East–West), forming a “Single SCO Transport Space” and aligning it with the “One Belt, One Road” initiative.

Mirziyoyev emphasized the need to launch a regional platform based on artificial intelligence technologies to adapt to climate change, advance decarbonization processes, and forecast environmental risks.

He also proposed organizing an international folk art festival, creating an online campus of the “SCO University,” and holding contests and olympiads among youth and students. Furthermore, he noted that the “Tourism Route” and “Medical Tourism Alliance” projects could open a new page in the organization’s activities.

Another important decision was made at the summit — a Universal Center for combating threats and challenges to security will be established in Tashkent, based on the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure. An Information Security Center will also operate under its umbrella.

Experts stressed that these decisions will bring cooperation in security and stability to an entirely new level and further strengthen the SCO’s role in global political processes.
