Uzbekistan approves 1 GW “green” baseload power project

On 11–15 January this year, the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2026 international forum was held in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The week, focused on sustainable development, renewable energy, climate finance and the “green” economy, brought together leaders of government agencies, major companies and leading financial institutions from more than 150 countries.

A major step for Uzbekistan was taken at the forum: Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy, Masdar and Emirates Utilities Development Company (EUDC) signed a cooperation document to develop a project that will provide up to 1 GW of baseload capacity operating 24/7 — i.e., continuously throughout the day — in the country.

The event was attended by Uzbekistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khojayev, Minister of Energy Jurabek Mirzamahmudov, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail Mohammed Al Mazrouei, as well as Masdar CEO Mohammed Jameel Al Ramahi. It is noted that the documents were officially signed by JSC “Uzenergosotish”, Masdar and Etihad Water & Electricity (EUDC’s parent company).

According to reports, the project aims to deploy capacity that operates non-stop around the clock. This could offer a practical solution to the widely discussed baseload challenge in renewable energy, reduce power supply interruptions, and meet growing demand for reliable “green” electricity.

It was also emphasized that the initiative could enable large-scale baseload generation under competitive tariffs and may later be viewed as a model project applicable internationally. In other words, this is not just a single project — it may become an experience that paves the way for future large-scale “green” energy models.
