January in Uzbekistan started warm and ended with sharp cold

Uzhydromet specialists presented a climate analysis for January. The past month surprised many with its capriciousness: the days that began with spring air turned into a truly harsh winter in the second half of the month. It was noted that in most of the territory of the republic, the temperature indicators were 1.2-2.4 degrees above normal.

January: From warm breath to sharp frost

In the first half of the month, the weather in our country was quite dry and mild. The daytime air temperature rose to 7-10 degrees Celsius, reminiscent of the first harbingers of spring. However, starting January 16, the situation changed dramatically - the influx of humid and cold air from the north brought a series of frosty days.

  • In the north and Ustyurt: The lowest temperatures were observed in these areas, with the thermometer reading dropping to 21-24 degrees below zero.
  • In the central regions: at night, it was 6-11 degrees below zero, and during the day, the maximum temperature was only around 2 degrees.

Record rainfall

This year's January was rainy for some regions. After January 16, rains turned to snow, and heavy precipitation was recorded in a number of regions.

  • Arnasoy record: 33-35 mm of precipitation fell in a day around Lake Arnasoy, which is almost a month's norm for this area.
  • Snow in Surkhandarya: On January 22, the daily precipitation in the oasis amounted to 56% of the monthly norm.
  • Dry Zone: The Fergana Valley remains the region with the lowest rainfall (20-65% of the norm).

Snow cover and mountain reserves

In the second half of the month, the plains of our country were covered in white. The height of the snow cover on the plains ranged from 1 to 10 cm, and in some regions up to 25 cm. Snow accumulation continues in mountainous areas. Currently, snow reserves in the mountains have reached from 70 to 121 percent, and in some places up to 140 percent, compared to long-term norms, which is a positive indicator of water reserves for the next season.

Also, strong winds and thick fog were frequently observed in January. On some days, the wind speed increased to 24 m/s, and visibility on the roads deteriorated to 50 meters due to fog.
