In Uzbekistan, divorce may be restricted for families married less than a year

In Uzbekistan, a bill proposing restrictions on divorce for families married less than a year has been submitted for discussion. The Committee on Family and Women presented this document to the public.
According to the bill, couples who have been married less than a year cannot apply to the court for a divorce. However, this restriction does not apply in cases of domestic violence. The goal is to preserve families and prevent divorces.
The bill proposes to supplement Article 122 of the Civil Procedure Code with paragraph 8¹. This paragraph sets the grounds for leaving an application unconsidered. For example, if the wife is pregnant or after the birth of a child, a husband cannot file for divorce without her consent within a year.
Also, it is proposed to extend the reconciliation period from 6 months to 1 year and introduce a mechanism for courts to examine family disputes more thoroughly. After divorce, it will be determined with which parent the minor children will live and the rules of communication with the other parent.
The bill also proposes improvements to the alimony system: the amount should not be less than the minimum consumer expenses, and collected funds will be accumulated in a bank account in the child's name. Some processes are planned to be implemented through the “e-government” system.
For reference, in 2025, over 37.5 thousand families in Uzbekistan divorced through the court. The most divorces were recorded in Tashkent, Fergana, Andijan, and Samarkand. The main reasons were mutual distrust, unpreparedness for marriage, and entering a second marriage.
