Uzbekistan may extend the reconciliation period

Uzbekistan is considering amendments to the Family Code that would give couples more time to reconcile before a divorce is finalized. The draft law, published for public discussion, was initiated by the Committee on Family and Women’s Affairs. Reports Uzdaily.uz.

Under current rules, a court can allow up to six months for spouses to resolve their differences. The new proposal would increase that maximum period to one year. The authors say the existing system often treats divorce procedures as a formality, especially when marriages are dissolved through civil registry offices without a full review of the causes of conflict or the chances of saving the family.

The draft also includes changes aimed at protecting children during divorce proceedings. Courts would be required to specify which parent minor children will live with and ensure their place of residence is determined in the final ruling. The proposal would also formally regulate communication between a child and the parent living separately.

In addition, the bill would revise alimony rules. Child support collected for children living in care institutions would be transferred to bank accounts opened in the child’s name under the supervision of guardianship authorities. Another provision would regulate divorce applications for couples married for less than one year, except in cases involving domestic violence.
