Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has rejected suggestions that the conflict in Ukraine could be frozen along the front line. According to him, this option contradicts the Russian Constitution and is not feasible.
"This cannot happen. Firstly, we have a Constitution that expresses the will of the people. Secondly, the four territories that have been annexed to Russia have not yet been fully occupied," Lavrov said at a press conference during his visit to Qatar.
Who made the proposals to freeze the issue?
This position of Russia contradicts the proposals put forward by Turkey and the United States.
- In November 2024, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan proposed to freeze the war in Ukraine along the current front line.
- Bloomberg reports that this proposal is also included in the peace plan developed by the United States.
However, the Kremlin considers this option unacceptable and does not intend to enter into negotiations on such terms.
What demands does Putin make to end the war?
Russian President Vladimir Putin is putting forward the following conditions for stopping military operations in Ukraine:
- The complete withdrawal of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), as well as the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions.
- Ukraine's refusal to join NATO.
Russia has so far stated that military operations will continue if these conditions are not met.
Attitudes between Ukraine and the West
Ukraine and its Western allies do not accept these demands from Russia. NATO and the United States have stressed that they will continue to protect Ukraine's sovereignty.
Thus, the chances of a compromise agreement between Russia and Ukraine to end the war are currently very low. It is unclear when and under what conditions peace talks will begin. With the fighting continuing and each side unwilling to back down from its goals, the war is unlikely to end in the near future. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
