The Trump team "unanimously" concluded that negotiations could not continue after Volodymyr Zelensky's altercation with Donald Trump and J.D. Vance at the White House, according to US President Donald Trump's national security adviser, Mike Walz.

"We had a meeting where we were asked to stay away from the press, and we told the president almost unanimously that we did not see how things could move forward after this insult in the Oval Office, and that any further action would only go backwards. And we told President Zelensky and his team that," Walz said in an interview with Fox News.

It was some kind of ambush. That was absolutely wrong. We had a great atmosphere in the East Room [of the White House], with both leaders ready to sign [an agreement] that would bring the United States and Ukraine together economically. The vital minerals that we need, the economic investment that they need — and this was after the British Prime Minister [Keir Starmer] said he was ready to send peacekeeping forces to Ukraine, the French President [Emmanuel] Macron said he was ready to send peacekeeping forces, and the [US] president just talked to NATO Secretary General [Mark Rutte] about broader security guarantees.

According to Walz, signing the agreement “should have been a really positive step for Ukraine,” after which it would have been possible to move on to further negotiations with Russia to end the war.

But Zelensky chose “the wrong approach, the wrong time and the wrong president to try to do this,” Walz said. He believes Zelensky is used to hearing from former US President Joe Biden that America will support Ukraine “as long as it takes” and write checks. “I think the [US] president is very upset and frankly angry because it’s not clear whether Zelensky really wants to stop the military action,” Walz added.

When asked by the host whether he thought that when Zelensky left the White House, Walz replied, “I honestly don’t.” “His team understood. His ambassador and his adviser were almost crying and wanted this to move forward, but Zelensky was still arguing, and finally I said to him, ‘Mr. President, time is not on your side on the battlefield, time is not on your side in terms of the situation in the world, and most importantly, the patience of the United States and the taxpayers is not infinite,’” Walz said.
