US President Donald Trump is ready to consider restoring military aid to Ukraine if peace talks are held and "confidence-building measures" are implemented, White House National Security Advisor Michael Waltz said, Reuters reported.
Peace talks are important for the fate of military aid
Waltz noted that if the parties engage in negotiations and bring the process to certain results, Trump may decide to restore military aid to Ukraine.
"If we can start negotiations and successfully conclude them and take some confidence-building measures, the president would be willing to make a positive decision on this issue," Waltz said.
He also said that the United States is discussing the location and date of the meeting with Ukraine.
Ukrainian position and Zelensky's response
Recall that on March 3, Donald Trump issued a decision to temporarily suspend military aid to Ukraine. Then, on March 4, in his testimony before Congress, he announced that he had received a letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressing his readiness for negotiations. Waltz described this letter as a "good and positive first step."
The United States said that it was currently working on confidence-building measures with Ukraine, and that this process would be discussed with Russia later.
However, Volodymyr Zelensky expressed dissatisfaction, saying that the meeting held at the White House on February 28 did not produce the expected results.
"This meeting did not bring the expected results. It is very sad that this incident happened. It is time to correct everything. We want future cooperation and dialogue to be constructive," Zelensky wrote in his statement.
Nevertheless, the Ukrainian president expressed his readiness to sign an agreement with the United States on cooperation in the field of mineral resources. He also stressed his readiness to actively work to end the war as soon as possible.
