The American company Maxar Technologies has restricted Ukraine from using its satellite imagery. This decision may be related to the US government's ban on providing intelligence to Ukraine. This was reported by the Militarny publication and the CyberBoroshno OSINT society.
The company justified this restriction with an "administrative request", but did not provide an official explanation. It is possible that this is due to restrictions on the exchange of intelligence between the US and Ukraine.
Maxar Technologies is one of the largest companies providing commercial satellite imagery. Its images are used not only by states, but also by the media, researchers, and intelligence agencies. For Ukraine, these images were crucial for monitoring the movement of Russian troops and assessing the consequences of strikes.
On March 5, the Financial Times, citing its sources, reported that the United States had stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine. Fox News journalist Jackie Heinrich also reported that CIA Director John Lee Ratcliffe wrote that the United States had “taken a temporary break on the intelligence front to ensure peace.”
This decision could have serious consequences for Ukraine. Because satellite images play an important role in monitoring events on the front, analyzing positions and making strategic decisions. Therefore, this restriction could create great difficulties for the Ukrainian government and military circles.
At the same time, the US government and Maxar Technologies have not issued an official statement clarifying the reasons for this restriction. At the same time, various assumptions are being made that this decision may indicate changes in the US policy of assistance to Ukraine.
It is not yet known how the Ukrainian government and military officials will respond to this restriction, but the loss of satellite imagery could complicate front-line intelligence operations and create difficulties in strategic planning.
