Vladislav Vlasyuk: Sanctions against Russia can be lifted if they ensure Ukraine's security

Vladyslav Vlasyuk, the Ukrainian presidential representative on sanctions, spoke in an interview with Politico about the possibility of lifting Western sanctions against Russia. Vlasyuk stressed that if the sanctions help ensure Ukraine's security, they can be lifted. According to him, the return of foreign business to the Russian market is "a matter of time," but this should only happen under certain conditions.
Purpose of sanctions
Vlasyuk said that the main goal of the sanctions is to "persuade Russia to stop its aggression" and "force it to conclude a lasting peace agreement." In his opinion, the sanctions are not just punishment, but their goal is to change Russia's aggressive behavior.
At the same time, Ukrainian officials emphasize that it is too early to talk about lifting sanctions. According to Vlasyuk, first Russia wants to make sure that it will make changes and take significant steps, and only then can we talk about lifting sanctions. He also noted that Russian representatives are trying to clarify whether restrictions can be lifted.
Agreements and international conditions
Discussions on lifting sanctions are tied to discussions with Russia on a peace agreement. The United States, under special circumstances, proposed a 30-day ceasefire to conclude a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, and the Ukrainian government supported this proposal. Vladimir Putin, however, supported this initiative, but noted that there are "nuances" and issues that require discussion.
Trump's proposals for easing sanctions
According to Western publications, US President Donald Trump's advisers are working on options for easing sanctions against Russia. The main condition for easing the restrictions is Moscow's agreement to conclude a peace agreement with Kiev. If this proposal is rejected, Trump has threatened Russia with "large-scale sanctions."
Zelensky's response
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described Russia's reaction as "manipulation" and preparation for rejection. He also called for new sanctions against Russia. Ukraine, therefore, needs new reliable mechanisms to protect itself and ensure its security.
Agreements on achieving peace between Ukraine and Russia can still be a step towards victory, but sanctions and their lifting play an important role in this process. Depending on the terms of negotiations with Russia and a peace agreement, Western sanctions may change, but this will require a constructive approach from both sides to achieve a result that satisfies everyone.
