New earthquake hits Myanmar near Naypyidaw
A new earthquake hit Myanmar on March 29, Tengrinews.kz reported, citing data from EMSC. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Myanmar, with tremors recorded at a depth of 10 km. The epicenter was located just 2 km from the capital, Naypyidaw.

So far, no reports of damage or casualties have been confirmed.

This comes just a day after a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar at 12:50 p.m. local time on March 28 (11:20 a.m. Astana time). That quake caused widespread destruction across the country. The epicenter was about 17 km from Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, home to 1.5 million people.

The government of Myanmar appealed for humanitarian assistance, asking “any country, any organization” to help and declared that all routes for international aid are open.

The tremors were also felt in Thailand, Bangladesh, Laos, China, and India. In Thailand, at least 10 people were reported dead, 16 injured, and over 100 missing.

In Bangkok, a 30-story building under construction collapsed, trapping dozens under the rubble.

On March 29, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev sent a message of condolence to Myanmar Prime Minister Min Aung Hlaing, wishing a speedy recovery to all those affected by the disaster.
