Amazon, one of the world's largest online retailers, has made an offer to buy the American division of the Chinese social network TikTok. This was reported by The New York Times.
Amazon's offer and the attitude of officials
According to the publication, Amazon's offer was sent in the form of a letter to US Vice President J.D. Vance and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. However, the parties involved in negotiations to change the structure of TikTok are not taking this offer seriously yet.
Amazon itself has refused to officially comment on these reports.
TikTok’s future under discussion
On April 2, former US President Donald Trump is expected to meet with senior officials at the White House to discuss the future of TikTok. According to sources, the potential deal involves attracting American investors to the social network’s capital, but does not include an obligation to officially sell ByteDance.
Anti-TikTok legislation and the US government’s position
In the spring of 2024, the US House of Representatives approved a bill that would allow ByteDance to ban TikTok in the country if it does not sell. Congress has assessed TikTok as a national security threat. According to them, the Chinese government could force ByteDance to hand over the data of US users.
In April, this document was signed by President Joe Biden. In January 2025, the US Supreme Court upheld the law.
Trump and TikTok’s deadline
After his inauguration on January 20, Donald Trump ordered the US attorney general to delay the law’s entry into force by 75 days. He said that TikTok could continue to operate in the country if it sold 50% of its shares to American companies.
Amazon’s opportunities and a possible deal
If Amazon’s offer to buy TikTok goes through, it would give the company a big step into the social media market. However, no formal deal has been signed yet.
