
The late Pope Francis delivered a public address in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican on Easter Sunday, April 20. It was his last speech. According to Vatican News, in his speech, the pontiff expressed sincere gratitude to those who helped him.
It is reported that on the last day of his life, Francis asked his assistant Massimiliano Strappetti to meet the people gathered in St. Peter's Square. The pontiff intended to drive around the square and greet people.
However, after his speech, his health deteriorated sharply on Sunday evening. About an hour later, the pontiff fell into a coma.
Francis told his assistants, "Thank you for bringing me to the square." The pope's assistants emphasized that he did not suffer in his final moments.
The Vatican previously announced that the pope's funeral will take place on Saturday, April 26, in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
Starting on April 23, the funeral service for Francis will take place in St. Peter's Basilica and will last three days. The main funeral service, which will be held on April 26, will be led by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Giovanni Battista Re. Patriarchs, cardinals, archbishops, bishops and priests from around the world will take part in the ceremony.
According to Reuters, US President Donald Trump will attend the funeral with his wife Melania, as well as Argentine President Javier Miglio and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. According to the agency, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also expected to attend the ceremony.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, however, does not plan to attend the ceremony. According to his press secretary Dmitry Peskov, it is not yet clear who will represent the Russian Federation.
