A shocking incident occurred at the José María Córdoba International Airport in Colombia. On May 3, security officers detained a couple who were trying to smuggle animals into the country. The man and woman were caught hiding six baby monkeys in their underwear as they were about to board a flight to the Dominican Republic.
According to official information about the incident, two capuchin monkeys and four rare tamarin monkeys were found with them. This species of monkeys is currently in danger of extinction and has been included in the list of special protection by nature conservation organizations.
The condition of the animals during the inspection showed the level of cruelty that the incident had been carried out. The monkeys were wrapped in special cloth bags, hidden between their legs and under the influence of sedatives. They showed signs of severe dehydration, malnutrition and mental stress.
After the emergency, all the monkeys were taken to the Cornare Nature Conservation Center for urgent medical examination and rehabilitation. According to the center's representatives, serious treatment and rehabilitation will be carried out in order for these animals to return to nature.
A criminal case has been opened against the arrested couple on charges of cruelty to animals, illegal animal trade, and illegal exploitation of environmental resources. It has not yet been officially announced which country they are citizens of.
"Fauna should live in freedom, not on land. We will take firm measures against such barbaric acts," said Javier Valencia Gonzalez, director of the Cornare organization.
This case clearly demonstrates the need for stricter legislation and control throughout the country regarding the treatment of animals, the protection of animals, and the fight against smuggling.
The monkeys were saved, and the criminals will be punished. Nature protection will be further strengthened.
