A shocking but tragic sight for locals and tourists has washed up on the shores of St. Peter-Ording in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. This is the third recent death of a large marine mammal in the region.
10-meter humpback whale — cause of death unknown
According to reports, the whale found on the shore was about 10 meters long, and the cause of its death is still unknown. The whale's body was loaded into a container using special equipment — an excavator — and taken to an appropriate center for disposal.
Currently, work to determine the cause of death is being carried out by specialists from the Hanover Veterinary Institute. Initial results are expected to be announced in the coming days.
Atlantic “guests” — are they becoming more common in the North Sea?
Humpback whales live mainly in the North Atlantic Ocean, but sometimes they also find their way into the North Sea. In February 2024, such cases were also recorded:
first, a 14-meter sperm whale was found on the island of Sylt, and then a younger and emaciated humpback whale was found on the island of Minzener-Oog.
The first died after falling out of the water and could not support its own weight, while the second was reported to have died from intestinal parasites.
Are marine fauna in danger?
Experts attribute such cases to natural factors, straying, pollution, feeding problems and climate change. Each case is investigated separately, but the frequent occurrence is considered a serious signal for ecologists.
Zamin.uz editorial team believes that after such incidents on the German coast, it is necessary to further increase the attention of the public and environmental organizations. The life of marine animals is directly related to the environmental responsibility of mankind.
