Rocket victim in Kursk: Uzbek citizen killed, details being clarified
The latest rocket strike in Russia's Kursk region has once again claimed a human life. On May 13, regional authorities reported that the body of an Uzbek citizen was recovered from the rubble of a hotel destroyed by a Ukrainian missile strike.

Official confirmation: casualties and injured reported

According to the information, the incident took place in the city of Rylsk, Kursk region. Acting governor Alexander Khinshtein stated that the deceased was a 39-year-old male citizen of Uzbekistan. “I express my deep condolences to his relatives,” he said in a statement.

It is also reported that two other men sustained serious injuries during the strike and remain in critical condition. They are currently being treated in a regional hospital in Kursk.

What happened?

According to the Russian side, on the night of May 11, the Ukrainian Armed Forces launched a missile strike on the city of Rylsk. Local sources report that a hotel, two private homes, a garage, and five vehicles were damaged. At the time, three injuries were reported; now, the death of one person has been officially confirmed.

Frontline around Kursk — still under fire

The Kursk region, bordering Ukraine, has in recent months become a regular zone of conflict and strikes. The Ukrainian army announced the start of operations in the region in August 2024. Shortly thereafter, they claimed control of 28 settlements.

Russian officials later reported reclaiming some of the lost territory. By January, they stated that 63% of the region had been "liberated," and by February — 64%.

Zelensky’s statement and Putin’s response

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that operations in Kursk aim to weaken Russia's military capability and create a buffer zone. In contrast, in April, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that the region had been “fully liberated.” However, Ukrainian forces have confirmed that fighting in the area continues.
