A major diplomatic event has begun today in the city of Istanbul with the participation of representatives from Russia and Ukraine. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warmly welcomed the delegations of both countries and called on them to take firm steps toward ending the war and establishing peace.
“Welcome to Istanbul!” — began the minister, opening his speech with sincere words. He emphasized that the resumption of these negotiations carries historical significance. According to him, the peace calls and readiness for dialogue by the leaders of both countries, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky, have paved the way for new opportunities.
“By gathering here today and working for peace, we are witnessing the emergence of new opportunities. We consider the peace statements made by Presidents Putin and Zelensky to be extremely important. The willingness of both sides to engage in open dialogue has opened a historic window of opportunity,” said Hakan Fidan.
Fidan noted that the current situation presents two paths: the first leads to peace, stability, and prosperity, while the second leads to more destruction, suffering, and loss. He emphasized that the choice of path depends directly on the parties participating in the negotiations.
“Our esteemed President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been continuously working to resolve this conflict peacefully and to stop the war. Today, we are pleased to welcome the Russian delegation to Istanbul. Likewise, we are very satisfied to host the Ukrainian delegation here,” added the Turkish Foreign Minister.
According to Hakan Fidan, this is the first meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations since March 2022. He also pointed out that each day the war continues poses a serious threat to human lives and further worsens the situation.
“It is necessary to stop the ongoing war as soon as possible. This meeting in Istanbul may lay the groundwork for future high-level talks between leaders. We consider these negotiations to be an important step toward that goal,” said the minister.
As he concluded his speech, Fidan stressed that Turkey has always stood for peace and is ready to actively participate in efforts toward achieving it.
“We sincerely believe that peace can be achieved through these negotiations. Turkey will always stand by your side as a country working for peace. Once again, welcome to Istanbul!” concluded the minister.
