One of Spain's largest airports, Madrid-Barajas International Airport, has been facing serious problems in recent months due to the influx of homeless migrants. According to the Daily Mail, the number of "unregistered" citizens on the airport grounds has recently increased from 50 to almost 500.
Terminals - a temporary shelter
Terminal 4 has become the worst affected area. People who had "stayed" in other terminals have been moved here. Photos of people sleeping on toilet floors, behind displays and in cafe halls are circulating in the media.
Airport workers say that sanitary rules are being violated and the safety of other passengers is being threatened. According to witnesses, some people are carrying knives or taking drugs. For this reason, certain areas of the airport are being disinfected - the risk of spreading mosquitoes and other pests is increasing.
Trade unions demand accountability
Trade unions are calling on the government to take urgent action, emphasizing the need to ensure the safety of tourists and create decent conditions for the homeless.
“Not all are dangerous” - the reality of the homeless
The majority of those sleeping rough at the airport are unemployed migrants without social support. Speaking to journalists, homeless Peruvian Fernando said that he “has to sleep with one eye open.” However, he stressed that not all homeless people are a source of danger, and that many are simply in dire situations.
What measures are the authorities taking?
For now, the government is discussing a solution to the problem and the police are monitoring the terminals. However, the number of people sleeping rough on airport floors continues to grow. The current situation requires a solution - because this is becoming not only a social issue, but also a security issue.
