Chinese scientists produce artificial rain using drones

Chinese scientists produce artificial rain using drones
In China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, a significant scientific experiment was conducted — local scientists successfully generated artificial rain using drones. This innovative experiment produced 70,000 cubic meters of rainfall — equivalent to about 30 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Chemically induced rain

The scientists used silver iodide to influence the clouds. The experiment took place over the Bayinbulak pastures at the foot of the Tianshan Mountains. The drones flew at an altitude of 5,000 meters and sprayed silver iodide powder — each load weighing 125 grams — at a rate of 28 grams per second. The total sprayed amount was 997 grams.

Despite the small amount of material, the scientists recorded additional rainfall across an area of 8,000 square kilometers. The result exceeded expectations in both volume and area of rainfall.

Technology and ecological impact

The project was conducted by the China Meteorological Administration’s Cloud Modification Physics Laboratory and Xinjiang’s Weather Modification Center. The increase in rainfall was assessed in three ways: using raindrop sensors, analyzing 50 years of climate data, and computer modeling. All three methods showed an increase in rainfall of about 3.8–4.3%.

While silver iodide has been used since the mid-20th century, the use of drones has greatly improved the precision and environmental safety of the technique.

A new solution for agriculture and water security

According to researcher Li Bing, the experiment shows great potential in combating drought and adapting to climate change. In regions like Xinjiang, which receive very little rainfall annually, the technology could be key to ensuring water and food security.
