Drone attack in Moscow: 33 UAVs destroyed, airports temporarily closed
On the night of May 28, an unprecedented drone attack was recorded in Russia’s capital, Moscow. According to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin via Telegram, a total of 33 drones were detected over the city’s airspace between the evening of May 27 and 03:26 AM on May 28, all of which were destroyed by Russia’s air defense systems.

Official information about the attacks is limited. The mayor has not yet made any statements regarding damaged facilities, the specific targets of the drones, or the possible consequences. However, the situation has led to an increase in the security level in the Russian capital.

According to a statement by Artem Korenyako, a representative of the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsiya), in order to ensure the safety of civil aviation, flights were first temporarily suspended at Domodedovo Airport near Moscow, and then also at Vnukovo, Zhukovsky, and Sheremetyevo airports.

Such safety measures were also introduced at several regional airports outside of Moscow. In particular, flights were temporarily restricted at Semyazino Airport (Vladimir Region), Yuzhny Airport (Ivanovo Region), Sokerkino (Kostroma), and Tunoshna Airport (Yaroslavl).

Additionally, the Telegram channel “Moskvach,” citing its sources, reported that residents in the cities of Troitsk and Podolsk heard explosion sounds around midnight. This information has not yet been confirmed by official sources.

These attacks are considered a serious test for Russia’s security systems. According to experts, a drone strike of this scale not only challenges air defense systems but may also pose numerous dangers to civil aviation and the civilian population.

So far, no party has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, such situations may lead to more unexpected scenarios amid the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
