Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky evaluated the proposal to deploy a military contingent of European countries on Ukrainian territory not only from a defense perspective, but also as a new path for peace negotiations. According to him, this idea may create an opportunity for compromise between Ukraine and Russia.
During a conversation with journalists, Zelensky spoke about an initiative called the “Coalition of Volunteers.” According to him, this group was formed by European countries that are ready to operate in Ukraine as security guarantors. Interestingly, this movement does not require NATO membership—it envisions the direct deployment of troops on Ukrainian territory.
“NATO’s fifth article can be implemented here, but our membership is not required. They will be stationed in Ukraine, and this is important not only for assistance but also for defense,” said Zelensky.
The President also expressed hope that the United States will join this process. According to him, if America participates together with Europe, this will serve as strong political and military support for Ukraine.
“If something happens, America will also be with us. This is an important political signal,” he added.
According to the head of state, the presence of European military forces on Ukrainian territory does not mean a reduction in aid, but rather its strengthening. Because this implies direct protection in the current complex situation.
“We are currently unable to fully regain our 1991 borders, but if European troops are present on our territory, this creates a new opportunity for us to start peace negotiations,” said Zelensky.
He also commented on what advantages the presence of European troops gives Ukraine. According to him, this is not only geopolitical protection, but also a psychological advantage.
“If you have such strong military forces behind you, you have the opportunity to negotiate with Russia on equal terms. If not, then the conversation turns into an ultimatum. Because Putin knows very well whom he is dealing with,” said Zelensky.
This statement may mark a new stage in Ukraine–Russia relations. The position of European countries in this initiative and the possible participation of the United States will further clarify the political landscape in the near future.
