In the last two days, the situation in the Middle East has once again escalated. The State of Israel has begun military operations aimed at destroying Iran's nuclear capabilities and has sharply intensified attempts to involve the United States of America in this process. According to the reputable American publication Axios, on Saturday, June 14, citing two high-ranking sources in Israel, the Israeli government has, over the past 48 hours, directly appealed to the Washington administration to participate jointly in concrete military steps against Iran.
The important point is that Israel currently does not have enough power to strike Iran’s most important — and well-fortified — underground facilities, such as the Fordow nuclear site. The country does not possess the specialized aviation or large strategic bombers required for such bunkers. However, the United States has such military equipment, and its air force is capable of striking targets at any distance, the sources say.
At the same time, as Axios points out, even a single bombing of one facility would draw the US directly into a war with Iran. However, if plants like Fordow continue to operate, Israel’s main goal — to completely destroy Iran’s nuclear project — clearly cannot be achieved.
According to reports, on the night of June 13, Israeli defense forces delivered powerful strikes on a number of strategic targets on Iranian territory, including centers located in the capital Tehran and facilities related to the atomic sector. The strikes continued on June 14. According to Iranian officials, these attacks resulted in the deaths of key military and scientific figures. In particular, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Hossein Salami, the chief of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Mohammad Bagheri, and several other high-ranking military leaders and nuclear scientists were reportedly killed.
The total number of people killed is said to be dozens, and among them, it is believed, are not only military personnel but also civilians. Israeli strikes targeted not only nuclear centers but also, possibly, missile manufacturing plants, military laboratories, and commanders’ headquarters.
Experts emphasize that such precise strikes were carried out based on intelligence data prepared in advance by Israeli military intelligence. According to them, Israel’s goal is not only to disable nuclear infrastructure but also to weaken Iran’s military leadership.
Such sharp actions by Israel are causing serious concern not only in the region but also on a global scale. In particular, political analysts in Washington note that such operations could negatively affect both the international image of the United States and negotiations on the nuclear deal with Iran. If the US becomes involved in these events, it could turn into not only a regional but also a global military confrontation.
This situation could also derail the negotiation process between the US and Iran. In recent months, there had been some warming in relations between the two countries around the nuclear deal (JCPOA). However, Israel’s actions have dealt a major blow to these opportunities for dialogue.
Currently, there are also various opinions in American society about these actions. Some consider Israel’s actions justified from a security point of view, while others are seriously worried about the US being drawn into a war.
In short, the Middle East is once again becoming a hot spot. The conflict between Israel and Iran has reached a new stage. What position the US will take in this situation is of great importance for the whole world. Undoubtedly, these events will influence the global geopolitical balance in the coming days.
