In the nuclear standoff, Iran expects a clear position from the US and IAEA
Against the background of escalating tensions in the Middle East, Iran has openly declared that it expects an active position from international organizations. At the next session of the United Nations Security Council, Iran’s permanent representative to the UN, Amir Saeed Iravani, made the following statement: “The IAEA must not remain silent in the face of Israel’s aggression directed at our nuclear facilities.”

In his speech, the Iranian representative spoke about the operation started by Israel called “Rebellious Lion,” emphasizing that this activity is contrary to international law, and that every country has the right to defend itself. “As long as Israeli aggression does not stop, Iran will not renounce its right to self-defense,” he said.

Iravani also noted that Iran’s nuclear program is used solely for peaceful purposes. According to him, the country is operating under the most comprehensive inspections within the IAEA’s supervision. He expressed concern over reports about the possibility of US military intervention in the conflict and did not hide that Tehran sees Washington not as an impartial mediator, but as a factor that could lead to serious consequences.

In response to this statement, Israel’s representative to the UN, Danny Danon, gave a sharp reaction. He said that the Iranian side has no right to ask the international community for help in self-defense. “Attempts to blackmail the world community and distort the truth will be exposed,” Danon said.

On the night of June 13, Israel launched a large-scale military operation against Iran. A day after these strikes against Iran’s nuclear program, the Islamic Republic delivered a retaliatory strike. In the following days, mutual strikes were observed between the two states. Both sides officially reported casualties and injuries. Some military and strategic objects were damaged, but the parties emphasize to the public that the damage was limited.

As negotiations and diplomatic actions have greatly slowed in recent weeks, the situation may rise to a new international level. It is noted that the confrontation between Iran and Israel may affect the political balance not only in the region, but in the entire world.

Iran’s nuclear program and the conflict surrounding it remain among the most pressing issues in international politics. The path that strong actors like the IAEA, the UN, and the US will take in this process may be a decisive factor not only for the region, but for world peace as well.
