Within the framework of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the speech of Russian President Vladimir Putin once again drew the attention of the world. At the event held on June 20, the Russian leader made a number of compromise and controversial statements regarding the war in Ukraine and the actions of the Russian army.
When the moderator asked a question about the Russian army advancing beyond the territories of Ukraine that are "considered Russian," Putin once again repeated his traditional view. In his words: “I have said many times — Russians and Ukrainians are actually one people. In this sense, I believe that all of Ukraine is ours,” he said. This attitude further intensified the situation, arousing great interest among forum participants and international observers.
According to Putin, according to an “ancient rule,” any territory where the foot of a Russian soldier steps becomes “Russian.” “We have such a custom: wherever the foot of a Russian soldier steps, that place automatically becomes ours,” emphasized the Russian leader. This phrase once again demonstrated how broad Russia’s political and military ambitions are in Ukraine.
At the same time, Putin noted that the Kremlin does not seek Ukraine’s complete capitulation. “In fact, we demand the recognition of the existing situation, the recognition of the fact formed on the ground,” he said. This was interpreted as an important signal for any negotiation process and diplomatic actions on the way to peace.
The most important and debated point was Putin’s thoughts about the possibility of the Russian army capturing the city of Sumy. According to him, in the Sumy region, the Russian army has created a buffer zone 10–12 kilometers wide. “Currently, there is a buffer in this area eight, ten, or twelve kilometers wide. Then comes the city of Sumy, that is, the regional center,” said Putin.
At the same time, he noted that at the moment Russia’s main goal is not exactly to capture the city of Sumy, and that this issue depends on the strategic situation and realities at the front. Such statements show the uncertainty of the military and political situation in Ukraine, and that the plans of the Russian side are not limited only to current temporary goals.
The international community and experts, of course, are closely following these words. Because every statement by Putin can serve as a new stage or turning point in the situation around Ukraine. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
