Major corruption in Xinjiang: high-ranking official sentenced to death
In China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, years-long cases of corruption have once again been exposed — on July 9, the People’s Court of Liuzhou City delivered a harsh verdict against Dou Wangui, former deputy chairman of the regional People’s Political Consultative Conference, reports the Xinhua agency. This court case has caused a great public outcry not only in the region but also across the entire country.

According to details, Dou Wangui was sentenced by the court to death with a two-year reprieve, lifelong deprivation of political rights, and complete confiscation of his personal property. Such a strict measure is explained, first and foremost, by the convict’s extensive corruption schemes and the significant damage caused to the state.

It is reported that Wangui was brought under investigation in May 2024 and was formally arrested in October. According to the facts established by the court, for 19 years — from 2003 to 2022 — he abused his official position in mining and corporate business sectors. It was noted that Wangui’s illegally acquired income exceeded 229 million yuan (almost 32 million dollars).

In court, it was stated that the former official, using his official powers, provided privileges to certain interested parties, acted as a “patron” in projects and contracts, and unlawfully increased his personal wealth. He also promoted his own interests in several major business deals and projects in Xinjiang through acquaintances.

It should be noted that the court considered Dou Wangui’s remorse, his admission of guilt, and his return of illegally acquired funds to the state as mitigating circumstances. However, this did not seriously affect the verdict: he is deprived of all political rights for life and all his property is confiscated.

This court case is considered another “example” and a symbol of the Chinese government’s determination in a broad anti-corruption fight. Officials emphasize that any violations of the law and abuses of power will be met with uncompromising resistance.

Time will tell whether this case in Xinjiang will lead to increased responsibility and justice requirements for leaders throughout the country. One thing is certain: the anti-corruption policy in China has become a one-way road.
