On July 24, new armed clashes broke out around the disputed area where the Ta Moan Thom temple is located between Thailand and Cambodia. These clashes once again escalated tensions between the two countries.
Accusations and Responses from Both Sides
According to Thailand, Cambodian military forces launched reconnaissance drones along the border and then fired upon Thai soldiers using multiple launch rocket systems. Cambodia, on the other hand, stated that they responded in self-defense.
Additionally, Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense claims that Thai forces carried out an unjustified invasion and that the Cambodian military responded accordingly to defend themselves.
Complex Situation Across All Sectors
Following the clashes this year, Thailand’s Air Force, using F-16 fighter jets, attacked targets in Cambodia, hitting two military sites. Cambodia also reported that they gave strong resistance against what they called the ruthless military aggression by Thai forces.
Social and Economic Negative Consequences
Due to the clashes, Thailand’s Ministry of Education closed all educational institutions in the border region and activated emergency action plans. Cambodia, in response, limited electricity and fuel supplies to Thailand and restricted access to the internet. This may have serious social and economic impacts on both countries.
History of Clashes in the Disputed Area
Clashes between Thailand and Cambodia on the border have occurred several times. These disputes are mainly related to undefined areas along the 800-kilometer border and the fight for sovereignty over them. For example, in 2011, the two countries exchanged artillery fire and engaged in clashes for a week.
Disputes Over the Emerald Triangle
These clashes are also linked to territorial disputes over an area known as the Emerald Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos meet. Both countries are vying for sovereignty over this region. Military actions and conflicts in this area have repeatedly threatened peace, and the situation remains highly volatile today.

The ongoing tensions between Cambodian and Thai forces, as well as the casualties and artillery clashes, could further exacerbate the issues between the two countries in the future. This will have significant economic and political repercussions for both sides.
