L 98-59 system: new planet found with potential signs of life similar to Earth

Scientists from the Exoplanet Research Institute at the University of Montreal have confirmed the existence of a new planet in the L 98-59 system. The newly discovered planet is of particular interest due to the high probability that it could be habitable. According to the researchers, this planet receives the same amount of energy from its star as Earth receives from the Sun, making it a potential candidate for supporting life.

At the center of the L 98-59 system is a red dwarf, around which small rocky planets orbit. Four Earth-like planets were previously known, but recently a fifth planet, L 98-59 f, was discovered. This discovery was made possible due to weak oscillations in the star’s motion. Using spectrographs and radial velocity measurements, scientists confirmed the existence of the new planet.

Researchers believe that the L 98-59 system is one of the most promising for searching for signs of life beyond Earth. Located 35 light-years away, it is relatively close to Earth. This suggests that its conditions may be suitable for sustaining life.
