China to Open Its First-Ever Barbecue Institute

China to Open Its First-Ever Barbecue Institute

In Yueyang, a city in China's Hunan province, the country’s first educational institution dedicated to the barbecue industry will be established. The new institute is a joint initiative between Yueyang Open University and the city’s Barbecue Association, with support from the local government.

According to local media, the institute aims to further develop the barbecue sector through professional training, job creation, and strengthening of the regional economy.

Yue Yanghua, Party Secretary of Yueyang Open University, stated that this institute will help transform barbecue shops across the country from simple food outlets into a structured and integrated industrial chain.

It’s worth noting that Yueyang currently has over 2,000 barbecue shops employing around 50,000 people. The sector’s annual turnover exceeds 2 billion yuan, equivalent to approximately 280 million USD.

Jiang Zongfu, Vice President of the University, emphasized that the creation of this institute is a key step in addressing employment challenges faced by local youth, particularly recent graduates. Barbecue work has become popular due to its low entry barrier and relatively high income potential.

This initiative is viewed as a new approach to vocational education in China. Barbecue is no longer just food — it's becoming part of the modern economy.
