In the town of Kayioka in northern New Zealand, a woman travelling on a bus was arrested after a two-year-old girl was found inside her suitcase. According to police, the incident occurred at a bus stop on Sunday.
After a passenger asked for access to the luggage compartment, the driver noticed one of the suitcases moving. When he opened the suitcase, he found the two-year-old girl inside. In a police statement, it was said that the girl had a high body temperature but was not physically harmed.
The 27-year-old woman was arrested and is being prosecuted for neglect or ill-treatment of a minor. The girl was taken to hospital for a medical examination.
The relationship between the woman and the child has not been disclosed at this stage.
New Zealand police acknowledged the alertness of the bus driver, stating that his quick action prevented potentially serious consequences.
