Beer to Be Brewed in Space for the First Time: Scientific Experiment Launched

The U.S.-based brewery Starbase Brewing and the aerospace organization Jaguar Space are preparing to conduct an experiment — beer will be brewed in space for the first time. The project organizers announced this on social media.

As part of the project, named MicroBrew-1, a special container will be sent to the International Space Station (ISS). It will contain malt extract and yeast, which play a key role in the brewing process. Astronauts on the station will initiate the fermentation process in test tubes themselves.

“This task is the result of two years of scientific research and preparation,” said Luis Zea, microbiologist and project lead at Jaguar Space.

The resulting liquid will be stored in space for a certain period before being returned to Earth. Through this process, scientists will study how the space environment — specifically microgravity and radiation — affects yeast activity and the characteristics of the final product.

This data is expected to play an important role in developing agriculture on Mars or other planets, and in producing food directly on-site.

Additionally, Jaguar Space is working on another experiment aimed at analyzing the fermentation process under conditions of microgravity and cosmic radiation.
