North Korea gives women the right to drive

North Korea, a country long known for its strict societal rules, appears to be introducing gradual changes by allowing women to enroll in driving schools. Though no official announcement has been made yet, observers suggest this reflects shifting dynamics within the country.

According to South Korean media, some driving schools in North Korea have started accepting female students, based on recommendations from the country’s Socialist Women’s Union. Until now, while women could regulate traffic, they were not permitted to drive vehicles.

As of now, it remains unclear whether women will officially be granted driving licenses, but their admission into driving schools is already seen as a historic step forward.

This is not the first liberalizing move under Kim Jong-un. Previously, he lifted the ban on women riding bicycles—a restriction that was enforced because skirts flapping in the wind were deemed inappropriate.

Experts view this development as a sign of North Korea’s slow but significant social transformation, especially regarding women's rights.
