Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a comprehensive attack plan in the Gaza Strip. He said he aimed to remove Hamas from power and temporarily take control of the territory, later handing it over to Arab forces. Netanyahu stated that he had no intention of governing the region in the long term.
The offensive could target Gaza City and the central camps, where around one million Palestinians and some of the hostages are located. The operation could last several months and is likely to lead to forced displacement of the population and a worsening humanitarian crisis. Army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir called this plan a “trap.”
Families of the hostages are also concerned. They believe hostages can only be freed through negotiations. Local media reports that living hostages could be killed during the offensive. Polls show that most Israelis support a deal.
The plan has also caused disagreements among international partners. UK Ambassador Simon Walter called the decision a “big mistake.” US Ambassador Mike Huckabee said the matter is for Israel to decide. Netanyahu has not presented a clear post-war plan for Gaza.
