Pashinyan accused of selling Armenia to the US after peace deal

A piece of news that has sparked intense debates on the global political stage is the signing of a peace agreement that put an end to the decades-long conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. According to journalists and political commentators, this agreement not only opened a new era in the Caucasus but also ignited disputes over the Armenian leadership’s close ties with the United States.

On August 8, in the historic hall of the White House in Washington, an important meeting was held under US mediation. US President Donald Trump, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev personally attended the ceremony. With their signatures, the agreement was officially concluded, which, according to official statements, ended the 35-year-long confrontation and armed clashes between the two countries.

During the ceremony, Donald Trump stated: “Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought each other for years, but now they will be friends, and this friendship will last for many years.” He also described the agreement as a historic turning point.

According to political analysts, the most significant point of the agreement is the decision to transfer a certain part of the Zangezur corridor, which passes through Armenian territory, to an American company. This route has already been named the “Trump International Road of Peace and Prosperity.” The treaty will last for 99 years, making it even more controversial and relevant.

Some experts and opposition representatives accuse Nikol Pashinyan of “selling Armenia to the US.” They believe this step could undermine the country’s sovereignty.

Additionally, during the ceremony, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the US signed a joint declaration defining the principles of peace between the parties. The document includes a complete cessation of hostilities, the establishment of trade and economic cooperation between the two states, and mutual recognition of territorial integrity within current borders.

After the meeting, Donald Trump announced that the US was lifting temporary restrictions on military cooperation with Azerbaijan. It was also stated that US companies plan to make major investments in the development of infrastructure in Armenia and Azerbaijan.

At the end of the ceremony, Trump addressed the leaders of the two countries: “You will both live in peace. If any problems arise, call me — I’ll fix everything.”
