Iran strongly opposes the “Trump corridor” in the Caucasus

Ali Akbar Velayati, adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, expressed his position regarding the planned creation of a corridor in the Caucasus initiated by the United States. According to him, Tehran will never agree to such a project and will maintain its firm stance on this issue. Velayati stated this in an interview with Tasnim agency, with his words quoted by Interfax.

“Such a corridor will become a platform for US President Donald Trump’s mercenaries, but it will not actually belong to the American leader,” Velayati said.

The Iranian politician also recalled that Tehran has always opposed the idea of creating the Zangezur corridor. In his view, this corridor could cause new contradictions in the region’s geopolitical environment, serve as a crossing of borders, and lead to the disintegration of Armenia.

For reference: On August 8, US President Donald Trump announced that he had managed to resolve the issue of using this transport corridor, which had been blocking the peace agreement between Yerevan and Baku. It was also announced that the corridor would officially be named “Trump’s International Road of Peace and Prosperity.”

“We resolved the main issue that had derailed previous negotiations. This is enshrined in the declaration. Such a name for the corridor is a great honor for me, but I did not ask for it,” Trump said.

According to the American leader, “this special transit zone” will allow Azerbaijan to access the territory of Nakhchivan while fully respecting Armenia’s sovereignty. At the same time, Armenia is also establishing exclusive cooperation with the United States to develop the corridor.

At present, there is an active debate over whether this project will further intensify geopolitical tensions in the region or, on the contrary, serve as a path toward peace and economic development.
