One of the topics that has attracted great interest on the international political stage is an analytical article published in the reputable British outlet The Economist. In it, journalists put forward serious assumptions about the political future of Volodymyr Zelensky, highlighting the possibility of growing internal threats against him.
According to the article, if Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, as a result of their expected meeting in Alaska, reach a peace agreement, the center of Ukraine’s political life could change completely. In this case, attention would shift not to the issues of war on the front lines, but to the upcoming presidential elections in the country.
As The Economist writes, the main tool in the struggle for power could be the investigations conducted by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) against Zelensky’s closest associates. Experts believe that the post-war peaceful political environment will turn these investigation materials into a powerful political weapon in the hands of his opponents.
The article also states that at the end of July, Zelensky himself took steps aimed at limiting the independence of anti-corruption bodies, which negatively affected his image. At the same time, this move created a foundation for further strengthening political pressure against him.
As the outlet’s analysts emphasize, as the topic of the Special Military Operation (SMO) in the country gradually fades into the background, the issue of corruption may become the main discussion topic for Zelensky’s opponents. This will make the materials collected by NABU an even more valuable political resource.
The article even quotes one of the publication’s interlocutors describing the situation as follows: “Some things do not disappear. This is not like something that goes away like a cold.” This once again shows how intense the upcoming political processes could be.
Thus, according to The Economist’s analysis, a peace agreement could open a new political stage in Ukraine, and at that stage, Zelensky is likely to find himself at the center of not only external but also internal political struggle.
