Gaza mourns slain “Palestinian Pele”

In Gaza City, the family and fans are honouring the memory of renowned footballer Suleiman al-Obeid. The 41-year-old striker was a key player for the Palestinian national team and Al-Shati club, with fans comparing him to Brazilian legend Pele.

According to the Palestinian Football Association and his relatives, he was killed in southern Gaza by an Israeli tank shell while waiting in line for humanitarian aid. His widow, Doaa al-Obeid, has kept only his number 10 shorts as a memento.

Al-Obeid’s death drew international attention. Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah criticised UEFA’s tribute for omitting the cause of death, asking: “How, where, and why did he die?” The Israeli army said that an initial review found no records related to al-Obeid.

The Palestinian Football Association says hundreds of athletes and coaches have been killed during the war, with most sports facilities destroyed. Nevertheless, al-Obeid never abandoned football and continued to train regularly even during wartime.

Local fans say they will remember him not only for his skill but also for his dedication to the sport. “This footballer played like the wind on the pitch — watching him was a joy,” said Gaza supporters.
