The wife of former South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol, Kim Keon Hee, has been arrested on charges of stock price manipulation and bribery. In court, she denied all charges, but the court decided to keep her in custody, citing the risk of destroying evidence.
This is the first time in South Korean history that both a former president and a former first lady are in prison at the same time. Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested in January for attempting to declare martial law in the country last year.
According to prosecutors, 52-year-old Kim Keon Hee earned 800 million won (about $578,000) through artificially inflating the stock prices of Deutsch Motors, a company selling BMW cars.
She is also suspected of receiving two Chanel handbags and a diamond accessory in exchange for business favours. In addition, she is accused of interfering in candidate selections during the 2022 by-elections and last year’s general elections.
During his presidency, Yoon Suk Yeol rejected three bills that sought to investigate the allegations against his wife.
