The court of Peru has decided to detain former head of state Martín Vizcarra for 5 months on charges of bribery. This was reported by Al Jazeera.
According to the information, Judge Jorge Chávez, during a court session held on August 13, stated that there is a high risk of Vizcarra fleeing, and issued a ruling to arrest him. It is alleged that he accepted a bribe 11 years ago while serving as governor of the Moquegua region.
Vizcarra, however, denied the accusations, calling the case a political persecution. It is known that he had planned to run again in the 2026 presidential elections.
In fact, the court had rejected the first request for his arrest in June. However, the prosecution appealed, citing the risk of escape.
Thus, in Peru, which in recent years has been shaken by corruption and political crises, Vizcarra has become the fifth former president to be imprisoned.
