Putin stressed that relations between Moscow and Washington had fallen to their lowest point since the Cold War. At the same time, he noted that sooner or later both powers had to move from confrontation to dialogue. According to him, he had established very good and direct contacts with Trump.
He expressed hope that European capitals would not create unnecessary obstacles or hinder steps towards peace. At the same time, he stated that agreements reached with Trump could open the way to peace in Ukraine. The president added that if Trump had been head of state earlier, perhaps the war would not have happened.
“The current situation in Ukraine is a tragedy and great pain for Russia,” Putin said.
After the summit, Donald Trump also shared his views. According to him, the meeting was productive: agreements were reached on a number of issues, but full understanding has not yet been achieved and no final deal has been made. Nevertheless, he spoke of “significant progress” and emphasized his good relationship with Putin.
“Putin also wants to end the conflict in Ukraine. And I hope to see him again soon,” Trump said. At the press conference, he also recalled the 2016 election “Russian interference” case: “We both knew it was a lie,” he said.
In addition, Trump responded with interest to Putin’s proposal to hold the next meeting in Moscow: “That’s interesting. I can imagine that.”
At the joint press conference, however, both presidents did not answer questions from journalists and limited themselves to statements.
In conclusion, although the Alaska summit ended without an official agreement, the open dialogue between Putin and Trump was interpreted as the beginning of a path towards improved relations between the two countries. At the same time, no specific result was achieved on Ukraine, and its fate remains uncertain.
