Global negotiations against plastic pollution initiated by the UN once again ended without results. Over three years of meetings, countries have failed to reach important decisions. The latest session in Geneva also did not bring the expected outcome.
Countries are divided into two groups. The European Union and about 100 nations support reducing plastic production. Oil-producing states, however, believe the issue should be addressed only through recycling and waste collection.
Scientists argue that recycling is not enough, since currently only 10% of plastic worldwide is recycled. Production, meanwhile, keeps increasing: in 1950 it was 2 million tons, while in 2022 it reached 475 million tons.
Large corporations are also joining the debate. Producers like Nestle and Unilever support reducing plastic and propose introducing unified standards and special fees. These funds could be directed toward recycling projects.
Environmental activists accuse oil-producing countries of prioritizing profit over nature. A Greenpeace representative called this process “a warning signal for our planet.” The negotiations are expected to continue later.
