Chinese and American scientists have created a real revolution in the construction industry. They developed a special cement that, unlike ordinary concrete and traditional cement, prevents heat accumulation in buildings and effectively cools them. This innovation has attracted the attention of the scientific community as one of the latest achievements in construction material technology. The research results were published in the journal Ccиенcе Адванcес.
According to the researchers, the new mixture allows the indoor temperature to be reduced by approximately 5 degrees Celsius during hot daytime hours. “When the cement hardens, a special structure forms on its surface, similar to the crystals of the mineral ettringite. This structure reflects visible light well and almost completely transmits mid-infrared radiation. As a result, the interiors of buildings remain cool even during hot midday hours,” the researchers say.
This innovative material is called “photon-structured cement” and was developed by a group of Chinese and American materials scientists under the leadership of Professor Miao Chanwen from Southeast University, China. Its main purpose is to eliminate the main drawback of traditional cement: in tropical and hot regions, ordinary cement reflects only 30 percent of sunlight and heat, which limits wall cooling.
Scientists created small house models from ordinary cement and photon-structured cement and observed their reaction to sunlight and heat. Experiments showed that during the hottest hours, the walls of houses made from ordinary cement reached 60–70 degrees Celsius, while those made from photon-structured cement reached 30–35 degrees Celsius. As a result, the indoor temperature decreased by about 5 degrees.
“This technology will allow significantly reducing building cooling costs in the future and serve as an effective means to counteract the consequences of climate change,” the article states. According to scientists, the new cement can be widely used not only in tropical and hot regions but also in cities highly sensitive to heat.
This innovation also has great importance for energy saving and reducing environmental impact. With photon-structured cement, future buildings will be not only durable and environmentally friendly but also provide a comfortable and cool environment for people.
