South Korea fired at North Korean soldiers

South Korean border guards fired warning shots when North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the border line. The incident took place earlier this week in the demilitarized zone (that is, the neutral zone where the armies of the two states are not stationed).

According to official information, North Korean soldiers, while working at the border, crossed the line and then returned back. South Korean troops fired warning shots more than ten times to stop them.

North Korea called this incident a “provocation” (a deliberate attempt to cause conflict) and accused South Korea of increasing tensions. Pyongyang warned that such a situation could get out of control.

The incident was revealed during the overseas trips of South Korea’s new president, Lee Jae-myung. At the same time, North Korea continues its work to completely close the border.

Although the two Koreas ended the war in 1953, a peace treaty was never signed. Therefore, they are technically still in a state of war, and such incidents may further increase tensions.
