Within NATO, the issue of sending a military contingent to Ukraine is in no way being discussed. This was reported by the chairman of the alliance’s Military Committee, Giuseppe Cavo Dragone. According to him, such directions are more a part of international politics and the subject of talks with Moscow.
According to Dragone, “we did not discuss this at NATO at all; there wasn’t even a hint at these topics.” In an interview with Corriere della Sera, he clarified the position once again, noting that inside the organization this issue has not been placed on the agenda.
At the same time, he added that “considerations about a military contingent may have been raised by certain countries on a bilateral basis.” That is, if there are such initiatives, it is likely they are mentioned not at the general alliance level, but within separate bilateral dialogues between states.
On August 18, Trump spoke about his readiness to send U.S. troops to Ukraine. However, shortly thereafter he backed away from this intention and stated his readiness instead to provide air support to European forces. Thus, sharp statements on the subject replaced one another, but the position of alliance officials is clear: in the NATO arena this issue has not been thoroughly raised.
In conclusion, as alliance leaders emphasize, the subject of sending a contingent to Ukraine has not, for now, entered NATO’s internal deliberations. Even if any initiatives arise, it is emphasized that they pertain to the bilateral formats of individual countries.
