In Iran, the sharp increase in executions since the beginning of 2025 has drawn the attention of the international community. According to the UN Human Rights Office, at least 841 people were executed in the first eight months of the year. This figure has caused great concern among human rights activists around the world.
For comparison: during 2024, a total of 975 people were executed in Iran. Thus, in just over half a year of 2025, almost 85% of last year’s figure has already been carried out. This situation indicates that the punishment policy in the country has become even harsher.
According to the UN, July 2025 was particularly bloody — 110 people were executed during this period. This is twice as many compared to the same month last year. Analysts believe this process is linked to the government’s uncompromising policy towards internal opposition and active groups.
UN representative Ravina Shamdasoni emphasized that the increase in executions shows that the Iranian government has turned them into a tool for suppressing opposition and eliminating voices demanding change. In the country, those sentenced to death are often accused of armed rebellion, treason, espionage, or religious crimes. For this reason, many of them complain that their trials were neither fair nor transparent.
